A Weekend of Surprises, Joy, and Family
On Tuesday, May 13, my cousin-in-law Nicole Camacho sent me a text asking if Rob my husband and I would consider flying to New York to surprise my cousin Mario for his 47th birthday. We were absolutely interested, but when I looked at flight prices, they were sky-high. I let her know that as much as we wanted to come, it just wasn’t in the budget.
A few hours later, Nicole shocked us with the most generous surprise: she told us she was treating us to the trip as a birthday gift for Mario. She explained that he was nearly impossible to shop for, but having Rob and me there would mean everything to him. We were touched and thrilled. Although we were a bit concerned about the cost for her, we also knew that this kind of gift from the heart was priceless.
We kept the surprise going until the very last minute. The day before we flew out, I casually asked Mario to take a picture, just to throw him off. Rob added to the ruse, telling him we had an “Amazon block” scheduled for early the next morning. What he didn’t know was that we were actually boarding an 8 a.m. flight to LaGuardia to meet Nicole by 10. Nicole told him she was going out to get her nails done but instead, she headed straight to the airport to pick us up.
When we landed and saw her, it finally felt real we were doing this. Once we got to their place, Nicole called Mario and told him there were packages outside he needed to grab. When he opened the door, there we were surprise! His jaw dropped, and his face lit up in pure disbelief and joy. It was one of those moments you just want to freeze in time.
Saturday was all about celebrating Mario’s youngest son, Nico, who had just turned two. The plan was to have a family picnic in Prospect Park. We all hustled to get there toting food, blankets, and balloons. It was a beautiful day. We sang “Happy Birthday” to Nico, shared snacks, watched him toddle around with delight, and just soaked in the joy of being together. His big sister Ona was also there, glowing with her usual creative spirit and joy. She doted on her little brother and kept us all smiling with her sweetness. Seeing the kids play together in the grass reminded us how special family time really is.
Sunday, Mario’s actual birthday started with breakfast at IHOP. It was laid back and warm, full of laughter, syrup, and second cups of coffee. Later that afternoon, we headed to DUMBO for a cozy Italian dinner. The food was delicious, but the real magic was in the conversation, the toasts, the hugs, and the feeling of just being present with one another. After dinner, we walked the neighborhood, taking in the skyline and snapping photos. The breeze was soft, and our spirits were high. It was one of those perfect nights that lives on in your memory forever.
Even Monday morning held one last adventure. Our flight was scheduled for later in the day, so Nicole suggested we squeeze in one more experience go-kart racing at RPM. It sounded fun and spontaneous, but I was also a little nervous. I hadn’t done anything like that since my stroke, and the thought of getting behind the wheel made me pause. Still, I reminded myself that fear doesn’t get to run the show. So I strapped in.
Once I got going, something shifted. I drove slowly, cautiously, but I did it. I cruised through the track, wind in my face, heart full of pride. Of course I came in last, but none of that mattered. I had pushed past fear, tried something new, and felt completely alive. That was the victory.
This weekend reminded me how powerful love, family, and thoughtful surprises can be. We flew in as a surprise for Mario, but in the end, the gift was ours too connection, joy, laughter, and new memories stitched into our hearts forever.
